🍚 Healthy Alms Bowl 💪🥬🍎🥑
By “Choosing and Preparing Food, Reducing and Avoiding Unhealthy Foods”
📺 With the upcoming Makha Bucha Day on February 12th, commemorating the day when 1250 monks gathered to see the Buddha without prior arrangement, the practice of offering alms to monks began during the reign of King Rama IV as a private tradition. During the reign of King Rama V, this practice was expanded to the Buddhist community and continues to this day (read more at: https://shorturl.at/KlMwG).
⁉️ Every day, in addition to the general public suffering from non-communicable diseases (NCDs), monks themselves also face health problems with NCDs. This is due to their practice of not being selective about the offerings they receive, resulting in nutrient deficiencies and excesses. (However, there are some groups that can choose their offerings when dividing food into individual dishes.) The Department of Public Health has therefore provided guidelines for selecting food for alms giving as follows:
1️⃣ ❝Choose❞ brown rice, 🐟 fish, liver, 🥩 lean meat, 🥬 fruits and vegetables, 🥛 plain milk, 💧 water.
🔸 Wash ingredients and fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
🔸 Offer brown rice alternating with white rice.
🔸 Reduce sweets and choose fruit instead.
2️⃣ ❝Prepare food❞ by steaming, boiling, baking, blanching, grilling, or making salads.
🔸 Cook food thoroughly.
🔸 Offer clear soups alternating with stir-fried vegetables.
3️⃣ ❝Reduce/Avoid❞ sweet, fatty, and salty foods.
🔸 In one day, add no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar, no more than 6 teaspoons of oil, no more than 1 teaspoon of salt, or no more than 4 teaspoons of fish sauce.
📑❗If we cook the food ourselves or even choose to buy it from a shop. Try applying these three methods. Since we enjoy making merit by offering food to monks, let's add healthy menu options to help prevent NCDs (non-communicable diseases) by focusing on "choosing, preparing, and avoiding" healthy foods when offering them.
